Key takeaways

  • A repair attempt is any word or action, serious or silly, that stops a fight from escalating.
  • Whether a repair works depends mostly on whether the other partner can accept it.
  • Accepting a repair is a skill of its own, and it is the one couples rarely practice.

Repair attempts in the Gottman Method, explained for couples: any word or action that keeps a fight from escalating. It can be an apology, a joke, a touch or "can we start over?". Gottman's research treats repeated failed repairs as a warning sign. What matters most is whether the other partner can take the repair in.

This explainer covers what a repair attempt is, the kinds that work and why they fail. Then it shows how to accept one when you are upset.

What is a repair attempt in the Gottman Method?

A repair attempt is the Gottman Method's name for any move that pulls a fight back from the edge. Zach Brittle's Gottman Institute article "R is for Repair" quotes the definition. A repair is any statement or action, silly or otherwise, that stops negativity escalating.

Repair matters because every couple fights. The same article notes that couples can survive harsh patterns like criticism, but only if they learn to repair. John Gottman's article on six things that predict divorce calls repeated failed repairs an accurate marker for an unhappy future.

The kinds of repair attempts that work

The Gottman Institute's Repair Checklist groups phrases into categories, including "I feel", "Sorry", "Get to yes" and "Stop action". These are our examples of each, plus two other common repairs.

  • I feel. Name your reaction without blaming: "I'm getting defensive. Can you say that more gently?" works.
  • Sorry. Own a small part. "My reaction was too strong. I'm sorry."
  • Get to yes. Find common ground. "I agree with part of what you're saying."
  • Stop action. Halt the spiral: "We're getting off track. Can we start over?" resets the talk.
  • A pause. Ask for a break and say when you will come back.
  • Humor or touch. A smile, a silly face or a hand on the arm, offered with care.

You do not need a script. Have two or three phrases ready before the heat arrives.

Why repair attempts fail

A repair usually fails because the other partner cannot take it in, not because the words were wrong.

Flooding. When a fight floods your body with stress, kind words barely register. Kari Rusnak's Gottman Institute article on flooding advises a break of at least 20 minutes. Come back within 24 hours.

The four horsemen. Contempt mocks a repair, and defensiveness swats it away. Our page on the four horsemen of relationship conflict explains each one and its antidote.

Low goodwill. When everyday friendship runs low, even a gentle repair sounds suspicious. Small daily moments rebuild it; our guide to bids for connection shows how.

Rushed timing. Pushing an apology before your partner is ready can deepen the hurt.

Try tonight

ask your partner which of these gets in the way for them most, and just listen.

How to accept a repair attempt when you are still upset

Accepting a repair means taking the offer, even if you are not ready to make up. It can be small and honest at the same time.

  1. Take it lightly. Say "Thanks" or give a half smile.
  2. Agree to slow down. "You're right, we're off track. I need a few minutes."
  3. Say what you need. Ask for time, then come back and offer your own repair.
  4. Skip the scorekeeping. Brushing off a clumsy repair teaches your partner to stop trying.

Accepting a repair is not agreeing with every point. It is agreeing to keep talking as allies.

Try tonight

agree on one short acceptance line you will both use, such as "Okay, I'm with you."

How to practice repair between fights

Repair is easier to use in a fight if you have practiced it calmly. Once a week, replay a small recent argument together. Each of you names the moment a repair could have worked, and says it now.

Our overview of the Gottman Method for couples places repair alongside the other Gottman skills.

When repair is not enough

If repairs keep failing for months, or contempt runs through most conversations, see a licensed couples therapist. Repair is not a tool for abuse, threats or fear of your partner. In the US, call or text 988 at any hour. You can find more helplines on Pragma's crisis resources page for couples.

How a couples app supports practicing repair

Pragma is an AI relationship coach built for two, not a therapist; it does not diagnose or treat. It is built partly on the Gottman Method. It has no affiliation with the Gottman Institute, which has not endorsed it.

Each partner has a private 15-minute session a day, by voice or chat. You can rehearse a repair or an acceptance line before you need it. The Soft Startup, a seven-day program built on the Gottman Method, practices raising a complaint gently. Fewer fights then need repair.

One repair, ready in advance

Pick one repair phrase and one acceptance line, and agree on them tonight while you are calm. If you want a coach to rehearse with, start your 7-day free trial of Pragma. No card to begin.

Frequently asked questions about Gottman repair attempts

What is an example of a repair attempt?

"Can we start over?", "I'm sorry, that came out wrong", a joke, or a hand on the arm. Anything that lowers the tension and keeps you on the same side counts.

Why does my partner reject my repair attempts?

Often because they are flooded, or goodwill is low. Try a short break first, then repair. If repairs keep failing for months, a couples therapist can help.

How do you accept a repair attempt?

Take it lightly: say "thanks" or agree to slow down. Ask for a few minutes if you need them, then come back and offer your own repair.

Is a repair attempt the same as an apology?

No. An apology is one kind of repair. A repair can also be a joke, a pause, a touch, or finding common ground.
