Pragma · In-law arguments

Couples app for arguing about in-laws: Pragma, for getting on the same team.

No app is built only for in-law arguments. A couples coaching app can help with what they are usually about. Pragma is a couples app for arguing about in-laws in that sense. Each of you talks with an AI coach for about 15 minutes a day, by voice or chat. Each session ends on one step. Pragma is a coach, not a therapist.

This page is for couples who argue more about one family than about each other. It covers what Pragma does, how it works when one of you feels torn and what it costs. It also says when an app is not enough. Comparing several apps first? Our 2026 roundup of AI couples apps sets them side by side.

What you get

What Pragma does as a couples app for arguing about in-laws

Pragma coaches the two of you on what in-law fights are usually about: backing each other up. It does not manage your in-laws, and it does not diagnose or treat.

Three ideas come up again and again in couples work on in-laws:

  • Same team first. Agree on a boundary in private before either of you talks to family.
  • Your parents, your conversation. Each partner speaks to their own parents.
  • It is rarely about the in-laws. The fight is usually about whether you feel backed up.

Each of you has a 15-minute session by voice or chat. You pick one of Juno, Aria and Kai, Pragma's three AI coaches. Juno, who is warm and leans on Emotionally Focused Therapy, suits the hurt behind "you never defend me". Aria, structured and CBT-based, suits untangling a holiday plan.

How it works

How a couples app for arguing about in-laws works for two partners

Each of you uses Pragma on your own phone, in a private account. You pair with an 8-character invite code, and the two accounts become one shared practice.

What if your partner feels torn between you and their parents?

Start alone if you need to. One partner can use Pragma solo and invite the other later. Transcripts are encrypted with AES-256-GCM and never shown to the other partner, who sees only completion, streak and exercise progress.

That matters with in-laws. You can work through frustration about their parents without forcing your partner to choose. When your partner joins, they bring their own view of their family, in their own private account. The Journal keeps your sessions for you alone.

Pragma also works in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Arabic. That helps couples who argue about family across two languages or cultures.

Five in-law flashpoints to bring to a session

Each flashpoint below pairs what to bring to your own session with one step for tonight. The program suggestions are ours, matched by each program's focus.

  • Drop-ins. Bring how the last surprise visit felt. Tonight, agree on one visiting rule. The partner whose parents they are passes it on. Program: The Soft Startup.
  • Grandparents' parenting advice. Bring which comments sting and why. Tonight, choose one short reply you will both use next time. Program: Speaking From Needs.
  • Splitting the holidays. Bring what each holiday meant in the family you grew up in. Tonight, each list your family's two must-haves before discussing dates. Program: Updating Your Love Maps.
  • Money from parents. Bring what the money feels like it comes with. Tonight, decide privately whether to accept. Each partner answers their own parents. Program: The Soft Startup.
  • "You never back me up." Bring the exact moment you felt alone, in one sentence. Tonight, ask for one thing your partner can say next time. Program: Small Promises Kept.

Between sessions

The Practice and The Blueprint

The Practice has 13 programs of 7 to 10 days, with one short task a day. Each task has a tip and a reflection. The Soft Startup spends seven days on raising a complaint without blame. Speaking From Needs, seven days built on Nonviolent Communication, practices asking for what you need. Small Promises Kept runs ten days on rebuilding trust through small commitments.

The Blueprint shows your progress over time: sessions, minutes, streaks and how often you followed through.

The science

Built on methods couples therapists use

The coaching is built on six methods couples therapists train in. They are the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, CBT, Nonviolent Communication, attachment theory and positive psychology.

Pragma's methods page credits each framework and shows where it appears in the app. Pragma is not affiliated with or endorsed by the owners of these methods.

  • One of you is ready and the other is unsure.
  • You argue across two languages or cultures.
  • You want 15 minutes a night, not an appointment.
  • Someone feels unsafe at home.
  • You want an app that talks to your in-laws for you.
  • A mental health condition needs diagnosis or treatment.
  • You want a licensed clinician rather than a coach.
  • The same fight has repeated for months without movement.

Honest answers

Frequently asked questions about in-law arguments

Is there an app for arguing about in-laws?

Not one built only for in-laws. A couples coaching app such as Pragma helps with what those fights are usually about. That is agreeing as a team before either of you talks to family.

What if my in-laws are genuinely toxic?

Agree privately with your partner on the boundaries you both want, before either of you talks to family. Each partner then speaks to their own parents. If anyone feels unsafe, or the pattern has lasted months, see a licensed therapist.

Why does my partner get defensive when I criticize their family?

Criticism of their family can feel aimed at them. The fight is often about whether each of you feels backed up. Naming that hurt works better than listing what the in-laws did. Try: "I felt alone when your mom said that."

Can I use it without my partner?

Yes. One partner can start alone and invite the other later with an 8-character code. Your sessions stay private when they join.
