What Pragma is: a daily AI relationship coach

Woman talking aloud

Pragma is an AI relationship coach built for two people who are already together. Each partner has a private account and a 15-minute daily session, by voice or chat. You pick one of three coaches: Juno (Connection Coach), Aria (Clarity Coach) or Kai (Momentum Coach). Every session ends with one small thing to try.

The Practice adds a program of 7 to 10 days, one task a day. The 13 programs are built on the Gottman Method, EFT, CBT, NVC, attachment theory and positive psychology.

The Blueprint shows your sessions, exercise days and recurring patterns over time. Once paired, each of you sees that the other completed a session, never what they said.

Pragma is a coach, not a therapist. It does not diagnose or treat, and it is not for crisis, trauma or abuse.

Best for: couples who are fundamentally okay but drifting and want to work on one recurring issue. It suits people who prefer talking to tapping, and a partner who wants to start alone.

What Paired is: daily questions for couples

Couple answering question

Paired is a daily-question and quiz app for couples, from Better Half Limited. Its App Store listing names no AI coach.

Paired's website offers "1,000+ questions, quizzes, games & more". Topics run from intimacy to money and family. The content is created with five relationship professionals. The app shows 4.7 stars from more than 300,000 reviews on its site, and 210,000 on the App Store. Paired reports more than 4 million couples have used it.

The app is in English, French and German, and it is rated 18+. One subscription covers both of you: $14.99 a month, or an annual offer listed between $39.99 and $74.99. There is a 7-day free trial.

Best for: couples who want a light, fun daily touchpoint and a shared library of conversation starters. It is a habit app rather than a coaching app, and it is well established.

Pragma vs Paired: the three real differences

They differ in what you do each day, in what your partner sees, and in price.

1. Coaching versus prompts

Pragma is a conversation with a coach. Paired is a prompt for a conversation with your partner.

In Pragma, the coach asks questions back. You describe the argument about the dishes. The coach asks what happened before it and names the pattern it hears. It leaves you with one thing to try tomorrow. Paired gives you a well-written question or quiz for the two of you to talk about. Which you need depends on the problem: "we don't talk" or "we keep having the same fight".

2. Private versus shared

Paired is shared by design. Pragma keeps each person's sessions private.

In Paired, you answer a question, your partner answers, and you talk about it. That is its appeal. In Pragma, people say things to a coach that they are not ready to say at home. Your partner sees that you completed a session or an exercise day, never your words. The couple-level view, the Blueprint, is built from both practices without exposing either.

3. Price for two

For a couple, Paired is cheaper. One subscription covers both of you, and Pragma is priced per person.

  • Paired: $14.99 a month for both of you, or an annual offer from $39.99.
  • Pragma: $19.99 a month each, so $39.98 for two. The yearly plan is $119.99 each, so $239.98 for two.

A year of Pragma for one partner costs about one counseling session, and it is not a substitute for one. If budget decides, Paired costs less. If you want a coach, you are paying for a different product.

Which couples app should you choose?

Choose Pragma to work on a problem. Choose Paired for a light daily habit.

Choose Pragma if:

  • You keep having the same argument and want to understand it.
  • Only one of you is ready to start. You can begin alone and invite your partner later.
  • You want to talk out loud, not type. A Pragma session can be by voice.
  • You speak Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic at home. Paired is in English, French and German.
  • You are between or before therapy and want daily practice. Tell your therapist.

Choose Paired if:

  • Things are fine and you want five minutes of fun connection a day.
  • You want the lowest price for both of you.

whichever app you pick, start with this. Each of you names one small moment from today that the other handled well. One sentence each. It takes a minute and needs no app.

How we compared Pragma and Paired

We read Paired's own website and its App Store listing, and compared it with Pragma on the same five points.

  • What each app is, and what you do in it each day.
  • Whether there is an AI coach.
  • What your partner sees, and whether one partner can start alone.
  • Which languages it runs in.
  • What it costs for two people, and the free trial.

We did not run a clinical test of either app, and nobody paid to be on this page. Pragma is our app.

When to get more help than a couples app can give

Neither app is for abuse, a mental health crisis or thoughts of self-harm. In the US, call or text 988 at any hour. You can find more helplines on Pragma's crisis resources page.

If trust has been broken or one of you is unwell, see a licensed therapist first. Our guide to the difference between relationship coaching and couples therapy explains the line.

Where to start with Pragma or Paired

If the two of you are fine and want something light each day, Paired is a good, inexpensive habit. If you want to work on something with a coach, start your 7-day free trial of Pragma. No card to begin, and your partner can join when they are ready.

Frequently asked questions about Pragma and Paired

Is Paired cheaper than Pragma?

For two people, yes. Paired's one subscription covers both partners at $14.99 a month, with annual offers from $39.99. Pragma is $19.99 a month per partner, $39.98 for two, or $119.99 a year per partner. The two apps do different jobs: Paired is daily questions and quizzes, Pragma is a daily AI coaching session.

Can one partner use Pragma or Paired alone?

Pragma, yes. One partner can start the daily sessions and The Practice alone and invite the other later with an 8-character code. Each account stays private. Paired is built around both partners answering the same question, so it is designed for two from the start.

Does either app replace couples therapy?

No. Pragma is an AI coach and Paired is a question-and-quiz app. Neither diagnoses or treats, and neither is for crisis, betrayal or trauma. Many couples use an app for daily practice between or before sessions with a licensed therapist. Tell your therapist if you do.

Can we use Pragma and Paired together?

Yes, and the two do not overlap much. Paired gives you a shared question to talk about over dinner. Pragma gives each of you a private coaching session and a program to practice. Couples who want both a fun daily prompt and real work on one issue sometimes run both.
