Inside Pragma

Tools that work around deployment limits

Time zones, patchy Wi-Fi and mission schedules make live calls unreliable. Pick each tool by the connection it needs.

Deployed partner's connectionWhat usually works
Little or no live contactLetters and email
Text only, or low bandwidthLove Every Day texts; text and voice notes in a messaging app
Patchy Wi-FiVideo messages you watch later, such as Marco Polo's asynchronous video messages
Regular Wi-FiVideo calls, shared calendars and coaching apps

One correction to many lists: Sandboxx sends printed letters to recruits at basic training, per its own site. It is not built for deployed service members.

OPSEC applies in every app

Never share mission, location or schedule details in any app, encrypted or not. Follow your command's guidance.

What you get

What Pragma does for military couples during deployment

Pragma gives each partner a short daily session that does not wait for the other to be online. The partner at home can open it any night. It is an AI relationship coach, and it does not diagnose or treat.

A daily session

Each of you has a 15-minute session by voice or chat on your own phone. You might bring the call that ended badly, or how to raise a hard topic next time. Each session ends with one thing to try.

Three coaches

You pick one of Juno, Aria and Kai, Pragma's three AI coaches, and switch any time.

How it works

How a couples app works for two partners during deployment

The partner at home can start now and send the 8-character invite code when the deployed partner has access. Until then, sessions focus on your own side.

Each of you keeps a private account on your own phone. Transcripts are encrypted with AES-256-GCM and never shown to your partner. Your partner sees your completion, streak and exercise progress. The Journal keeps your sessions for you alone.

Pragma needs an internet connection, and we have not tested it on very low bandwidth. On limited connections, the free text-based tools above are the safer choice.

Between sessions

The Practice and The Blueprint

The Practice has 13 programs of 7 to 10 days, with one short task a day. The tasks are small enough to survive a schedule change with no warning. The Appreciation Habit takes about five minutes a day. The Daily Debrief, built on the Gottman Method, fits the call when you get one.

The Blueprint shows your progress over time: sessions, minutes, streaks and how often you followed through.

The science

Built on methods couples therapists use

The coaching is built on six methods couples therapists train in. They are the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, CBT, Nonviolent Communication, attachment theory and positive psychology.

Pragma's methods page credits each framework and shows where it appears in the app. Pragma is not affiliated with or endorsed by the owners of these methods.

  • You want structure between calls.
  • You need free official help first: start with Military OneSource.
  • The deployed partner has little or no connection.
  • Anyone is unsafe or in crisis.
  • A mental health condition needs diagnosis or treatment.
  • Either of you is under 18.

Honest answers

Frequently asked questions about couples apps for military couples

Is there an official military couples app?

There is no single Department of Defense couples chat app. Military OneSource offers free tools instead: confidential counseling, the Love Every Day text program and the OurRelationship online program.

How many apps should a military couple use?

Usually three layers at most. Use the free Military OneSource tools and one messaging app. Add a coaching app only for a daily habit. Choose the messaging app by the deployed partner's connection first.

Can one partner use a couples app while the other is deployed?

Yes. In Pragma, the partner at home can start alone and invite the deployed partner later with an 8-character code. Sessions stay private.

Is it safe to talk about deployment in a couples app?

Talk about feelings, not operations. Never share mission, location or schedule details in any app, even an encrypted one. Follow your command's OPSEC guidance.
