Paired app alternative for couples therapy: what to use instead

Key takeaways
- The right Paired alternative depends on whether you want more conversation or help with one real problem.
- An AI coaching app, a card deck or a workbook can add depth, but none of them is therapy.
- For betrayal, fear or a fight you cannot stop repeating, the real alternative is a licensed couples therapist.
The best Paired app alternative for couples therapy depends on what you need. For help with one recurring problem, try an AI coaching app or a licensed couples therapist. For deeper conversation without a subscription, try a card deck or a workbook. Paired itself is a daily-question app, and no app on this page is therapy.
This guide is for Paired users who have outgrown the daily question, or who now want real help with something. It sorts the alternatives by need, with costs read on 7 October 2026. We make Pragma, an AI relationship coach, so we also say plainly where Paired is still the better fit.
Why people look for a Paired app alternative
People look for a Paired alternative for one of two reasons. Either the daily questions feel too light, or a real problem has shown up that a question cannot reach. The two reasons point to very different tools.
Paired is a well-made habit app. Its App Store listing (read 7 October 2026) describes daily questions, quizzes and games. It also lists guided topic series on subjects like money and love languages. Each of you answers privately, and answers stay hidden until both of you reply. The listing names no AI feature and no counseling.
That design is the point of Paired. It gives the two of you a small shared moment and something to talk about. It does not ask you follow-up questions, and it does not track a pattern across weeks. When "we never talk" turns into "we keep having the same fight", a prompt is no longer enough.
So before you switch, name the gap: depth, structure, privacy, or a problem that needs a professional.
Paired app alternatives at a glance, matched to your need
Paired alternatives fall into five groups: AI coaching apps, other couples apps, card decks, books and licensed couples therapy. Each one fills a different gap. Costs are what each source showed when we read it on 7 October 2026.
| Your need | Alternative | What the two of you do | Cost (read 7 October 2026) | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Work on one recurring issue, a little each day | AI coaching app, such as Pragma | Each partner has a private session of about 15 minutes, then tries one small step | $19.99 a month per partner | Diagnose, treat or replace a therapist |
| Follow a set course together | Another couples app, such as Lasting | Work through guided sessions at your own pace | Lasting Premium covers both of you. App Store purchases run $11.99 to $79.99 | Respond to what happened tonight |
| Deeper questions, no subscription | Card deck, such as the Gottman Card Decks app | Take turns reading a card aloud and answering | Free app | Track anything or coach either of you |
| Learn a method in depth | Book or workbook | Read one chapter a week and do its exercise | The price of one book | Hear your side or adapt to you |
| Betrayal, escalating fights, a pattern you cannot break | Licensed couples therapist | Weekly sessions together, in person or online | $150 to $300 a session in person | Be there every evening |
The sections below take each group in turn. If you only want two apps side by side, read our full Pragma vs Paired comparison.
An AI coaching app as a Paired alternative
An AI coaching app is the closest Paired alternative for couples who want to work on a problem. Instead of a shared question, each of you talks with a coach that asks questions back. Every session ends on one small thing to try.
We make Pragma, so here is exactly what it is. Pragma is an AI relationship coach, not a therapist. It does not diagnose or treat. Each partner has a 15-minute daily session by voice or chat, on their own phone. You pick one of three coaches: Juno (Connection Coach), Aria (Clarity Coach) or Kai (Momentum Coach).
The coaching is built on six methods used in couples work, credited on our methods page. They include the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT. The Gottman Method looks at how couples argue and make up. EFT works on the cycle where one partner pursues and the other withdraws. Pragma is not affiliated with or endorsed by the owners of these methods.
What differs from Paired. Paired is shared by design. In Pragma, each person's words stay private and are encrypted. Your partner sees your completion and streak, never your transcripts. One of you can start alone, and the other joins later with an 8-character invite code.
What it adds. The Practice offers 13 programs of 7 to 10 days, one short task a day. The Blueprint shows sessions, streaks and the patterns that keep coming back. The app runs in six languages, including Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic.
What it costs. Pragma is priced per partner: $19.99 a month, $44.99 every 3 months or $119.99 a year. Paired's single subscription covers both of you, so Paired costs less for a couple. This switch shows the monthly price for one partner or both.

Other couples apps as Paired alternatives
Other couples apps suit you if you like Paired's format but want more structure. The clearest example is Lasting, a course-style app for two. It has no AI coach, so it works more like a guided curriculum.
Lasting's App Store listing (read 25 October 2026) is from Groop Internet Platform inc. It describes guided sessions on communication, connection and conflict. It also offers conversation starters and relationship reminders. A free Foundations series covers the basics in five sessions.
The listing says Lasting Premium "unlocks the entire app for two users". Its in-app purchases list Premium at $11.99 to $79.99 and Lasting Plus at $19.99 to $89.99. The listing does not say which price is monthly or yearly. There is a 7-day free trial, and the app is in English only. It shows 4.7 stars from 25,000 ratings.
A course suits couples who like a plan and steady progress. Its limit is the same as any fixed program: it cannot react to the argument you had at dinner. For a side-by-side view of six apps with dates, use the 2026 roundup.
Card decks and books: Paired alternatives without a subscription
A card deck or a book is the cheapest Paired alternative, and often the deepest. Both put the two of you face to face instead of on two screens. Neither needs a monthly plan.
Card decks. The Gottman Card Decks app (read 7 October 2026) is free. It lists 22 card decks with more than 1,000 cards. The listing does not mention linking two accounts, so you share one phone. Take turns: one reads a card aloud, the other answers, then swap.
A deck works like Paired without the waiting, because you answer out loud in the same room. It also means nothing stays private, so pick lighter decks first.
Books and workbooks. Two well-known books come straight from the methods most couples therapists use. The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is by John Gottman and Nan Silver. The revised edition from Harmony includes new exercises. Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson, who developed Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, is built around seven conversations for two.
A book works best as a slow weekly ritual. Read one chapter each during the week. On Sunday, do its exercise together for 20 minutes.
Try tonight
ask each other one card-deck question out loud, with no app. Each of you gets two minutes. The listener asks one follow-up and says nothing else. The question: "What is one small thing I did this month that made you feel cared for?"

Licensed couples therapy: the Paired alternative for real problems

For betrayal, contempt, fear or a fight you cannot stop repeating, the alternative is a licensed couples therapist. No app on this page can assess what is happening. A therapist can, and can treat it.
It costs more than an app. Therapy Cost Guide (read 7 October 2026) puts a US couples session at $150 to $300. The same guide gives $100 to $200 a session for online couples therapy. It also notes that many therapists keep a reduced-fee spot without advertising it, so ask.
Lower-cost routes exist. The Open Path Collective charges a one-time $65 membership. Couples and family sessions then cost $40 to $80, in person or by video.
Online platforms are another route. Regain, a couples platform, costs $60 to $90 a week, billed every four weeks, per Choosing Therapy (October 2026). One fee covers both partners there.
Our guide on what to do when couples therapy is too expensive covers more options. Not sure whether you need an app, a therapist or both? This short check sorts it out in about two minutes.

If the result says "both", tell your therapist about the app. Many couples use an app for daily practice between sessions. Our guide to coaching vs couples therapy explains where each one starts and stops.
When Paired is still the better fit
Paired is the better fit when the two of you are fine and want a light, fun daily touchpoint. A good habit is worth keeping.
Stay with Paired if you enjoy answering the same question and comparing notes. Stay if one subscription for both of you matters most to your budget. Stay if you like the app as it is.
You can also keep Paired and add something else. Paired gives you a shared question over dinner. A card deck, a book or a coaching app gives you a way to work on one issue. The two jobs barely overlap.
How to choose a Paired alternative in three questions
Choosing a Paired alternative takes three questions, answered together. Ask them out loud, not in your head. Each answer narrows the list above.
- Is it quiet, or is it a problem? If you mostly talk logistics, try a card deck or a book. If the same fight keeps returning, try a coaching app or a therapist.
- Will both of you join now? If not, start with a book or a coaching app.
- What can you spend for two? A free deck costs nothing. Apps run from about $15 to $40 a month for two. Therapy runs per session.
A one-week trial is easier to agree to than a big change. Say: "I like our questions, but I want us to work on the evenings that go wrong. Can we try something for a week?"
When to get more help
A couples app, a card deck or a book is not for abuse, danger, trauma or thoughts of self-harm. It is also not for a mental health condition that needs treatment.
In the US, call or text 988 at any hour. The Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. You can find more helplines on Pragma's crisis resources page.
For betrayal or a pattern you cannot interrupt, see a licensed therapist first. An app can support that work later, but it should not come first.

Frequently asked questions about Paired alternatives
What is the best Paired alternative for a couple with a real problem?
For a problem that keeps coming back, try an AI coaching app or a licensed couples therapist. A coaching app gives each of you a short daily session and one step to try. A therapist can assess and treat, which no app can. For betrayal or fear, start with the therapist.
Is there a free alternative to Paired?
Yes. The Gottman Card Decks app is free and lists 22 decks with more than 1,000 cards. You share one phone and answer out loud. A library copy of a couples workbook is another free option.
Is Paired a form of couples therapy?
No. Paired's App Store listing describes daily questions, quizzes and games, and names no counseling. Lasting calls itself "guided relationship counseling", but its listing says it is not mental health advice. Pragma is an AI coach. Only a licensed therapist provides couples therapy.
Is Pragma cheaper than Paired?
No, not for two people. One Paired subscription covers both partners: $14.99 a month on the App Store, or $79.99 a year per couple on Paired's site. Pragma is $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year per partner. They do different jobs: Paired gives you shared questions, and Pragma gives each of you a private coaching session.
Can we use Paired and another app together?
Yes, and many couples do. Paired gives you a light shared question. A coaching app, a deck or a book gives you a way to work on one issue. Keep the total to about 15 minutes a day so neither becomes a chore.
