AI relationship coach for newlyweds: Pragma, for the habits you build first.

Pragma is an AI relationship coach for newlyweds. Each of you talks with an AI coach for about 15 minutes a day, by voice or chat. You bring what came up, such as the joint account or Sunday at your in-laws. Each session ends with one small thing to try. Pragma is a coach, not a therapist, and does not diagnose or treat.

This page is for couples in the first years of marriage who are doing fine. It covers what Pragma does, how it works for two, what it costs and when it is the wrong tool. New to the idea? Our page on the AI relationship coach for couples explains the basics.

Inside Pragma

Why newlyweds start early

The first years of marriage set habits you keep. Small daily responses matter more than big gestures.

Research from Gottman's lab followed newlyweds for six years. Zach Brittle's Gottman Institute article on turning toward each other reports the result. Couples still married had turned toward each other's bids for attention 86% of the time. Couples who divorced averaged 33%.

A short daily practice is one way to make turning toward a habit while things are easy. Our guide to bids for connection explains the idea in full.

What you get

What Pragma does as an AI relationship coach for newlyweds

Pragma gives each partner a short guided session a day on their own phone. Newlyweds tend to bring the same handful of topics.

  • Merging money. Talk through spending and shared accounts privately, then raise one proposal together.
  • Dividing chores. Map who does what, and bring one fair change to your partner.
  • Family and in-laws. Work out your boundaries before the holiday visit, not during it.
  • Expectations. Name what you hoped married life would feel like, in your own words first.
  • Daily rhythm. Set up a short evening check-in while life is still simple.

You pick one of Pragma's three AI coaches and can switch any time. Juno, Connection Coach, is warm and leans on Emotionally Focused Therapy. Aria, Clarity Coach, is structured and uses CBT-style questions. Kai, Momentum Coach, is encouraging and solution-focused.

The habit matters more than the length of any one session.

How it works

How an AI relationship coach for newlyweds works for two partners

Pragma is built for two people on two phones. You share one practice and keep two private accounts.

  1. One of you starts. Start the trial on the web. The keener partner can begin tonight.
  2. The other joins with a code. Your partner enters your 8-character invite code when ready.
  3. Each of you talks privately. Your partner sees your completion, streak and exercise progress, never your transcripts.

Because you pair openly, neither of you is coached behind the other's back. Transcripts are encrypted with AES-256-GCM. The Journal keeps your sessions for you alone. Pragma also works in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Arabic.

Between sessions

The Practice and The Blueprint for newlyweds

The Practice has 13 programs of 7 to 10 days, with one short task a day. Each task has a tip and a reflection. A seven-day program fits around work, family visits and a new home.

For newlyweds, three programs fit well. Building Your Rituals runs seven days and is built on the Gottman Method. Updating Your Love Maps, also seven days, keeps you curious about each other. The Soft Startup spends seven days on raising a complaint without starting a fight, useful for money and chores.

The Blueprint shows your progress over time: sessions, minutes, streaks and how often you followed through.

The science

Built on methods couples therapists use

The coaching is built on six methods couples therapists train in. They are the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, CBT, Nonviolent Communication, attachment theory and positive psychology.

Pragma's methods page credits each framework and shows where it appears in the app. Pragma is not affiliated with or endorsed by the owners of these methods.

Safety first

When to get more help

An app like this is not for abuse, control, fear of your partner, or thoughts of self-harm. It is not for a mental health condition that needs treatment. Pragma's privacy policy says it scans sessions for signs of crisis and points to resources. It is not an emergency service.

In the US, call or text 988 at any hour. The Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. You can find more helplines on Pragma's crisis resources page for couples.

If the same hurt keeps returning, see a licensed couples therapist. Many couples use both.

Honest answers

Frequently asked questions about AI relationship coaches for newlyweds

Should newlyweds use a relationship app if things are going well?

Yes, that is a good time to start. Habits are easier to build before patterns set. A short daily practice keeps small moments of attention from slipping.

Can one of us use it without the other?

Yes. One partner can start alone and invite the other later with an 8-character code. Your sessions stay private when they join.

Can my partner see what I say to the coach?

No. In Pragma, transcripts are encrypted and never shown to your partner. They see only your completion, streak and exercise progress.

Can we try it before paying?

Yes. Pragma has a 7-day free trial that starts on the web, with no card needed. Each partner starts their own trial. To continue, you subscribe in the iOS or Android app.
